Foreign Terror Suspect Avoids A Guantanamo Bay Trial

A foreign terror suspect will face trial on U.S. soil instead of at Guantanamo Bay.  Algerian terror suspect Ali Charaf Damache arrived in Philadelphia on Friday after being extradited from Spain.  The Justice Department said Damache has made an initial court appearance for conspiring to provide materials to support terrorists.  There are several parts of Damache's case that point to the logic behind a federal court prosecution, like the facts that relevant witnesses and his alleged co-conspirators are located in Pennsylvania.

The Justice Department didn't say if the case represents a shift in Attorney General Jeff Sessions' views on having terror suspects tried on U.S. soil versus Guantanamo Bay.  In 2011, Damache was indicted in the United States and accused of conspiring with others to "wage violent jihad."  Previously, President Trump and Jeff Sessions maintained that terrorism suspects should be held and tried at Guantanamo instead of in U.S. civilian courts.
