World Vision's Global 6k for Water in Chicago is happening on Saturday, May 4th at 9 a.m. at Lincoln Park (South Fields).
World Vision is the largest non-governmental provider of clean water in the developing world, providing a new person with clean water every 10 seconds and three more schools every day with clean water.
The Global 6k for Water’s mission is to provide clean water resources for thousands of people in the developing world. In the early 1990s, World Vision was reaching an estimated 200,000 people per year in a select number of countries. Today, they reach an estimated 3.2 million people a year.
Still, nearly 1,000 children under age 5 die every day from diarrhea caused by contaminated water, poor sanitation and improper hygiene, and 844 million people lack access to clean water. Through events like the Global 6k, World Vision is committed to increasing the number of people who have access to clean water. Every $50 registration fee for this event provides clean water to one person.
Six kilometers (3.7 miles) is the average distance people–usually women and girls–walk to get water for their families in the developing world. Often, the walk is dangerous, the water dirty and the children miss school.
