Americans will need passport to fly within U.S.

Requirements to fly in the United States will be tightened beginning early next year. Even if just traveling around the country, some states' driver's licenses will not be enough identification for domestic flights. The REAL ID Act mandates what kinds of IDs can be used and is cracking down on stricter standards. Several states that aren't deemed as compliant with the new standards will mean residents will need to carry a passport to travel within the U.S. This deadline expires on 22 January 2018.

Currently, a little more than half of states are compliant.
