Massively Successful GoFundMe Campaign Was a Huge Scam

Prosecutors in New Jersey say this viral and massively successful GoFundMe campaign was all just a scam.

Last year, Kate McClure said she ran out of gas while driving when Johnny Bobbitt, a homeless vet, gave her his last $20. McClure and her boyfriend, Mark D’Amico created a GoFundMe campaign for Bobbitt that captured America’s heart... And wallets. Over $400,000 was raised for Bobbitt.

But the story made headlines again this fall when Bobbitt began making public claims that he never saw any of the money. Lawyers got involved, and investigators looked into the case. They discovered the shocking twist: the story was a lie, and all three of them were in on it. McClure, D'Amico, and Bobbitt all knew each other and concocted the story together. But the scam fell apart when Bobbitt went public about not getting his share.

Now all three have been arrested and charged with conspiracy and theft by deception.
