Pawn Shops See Spike in Business From Government Shutdown

After more than 30 days of the government shutdown, many federal employees are desperate and doing whatever they can to keep food on the table.

Michael Mack, the owner of a pawn shop in Las Vegas, says he’s seeing a surge in customers who are hitting hard times after being furloughed in the federal shutdown. Mack says he’s seeing Christmas presents being pawned. One woman even had to pawn her mother's wedding ring so her family could eat.

The owner of the shop is now offering workers interest-free loans during the duration of the shutdowns.
