Firefighter Risks His Life on Frozen River to Rescue Dog

A firefighter in Montana braved icy waters to save Maxx, a dog who had fallen into Whitefish River.

With the help of a specially designed suit to keep him warm, David Mangold swam out to Maxx, freeing him from the ice and helping him get safely back to shore. Maxx was warmed up and is now safe and sound, but Mangold said he hopes other pet owners will remember to keep themselves and their pets safe in cold weather. "When animals go through the ice, please don't go out and try to get them," Mangold said. "Leave it to the professionals."

Very good advice to pass along to other pet owners! It might be your first instinct to go right in after your pet, but you would be putting yourself in danger. It's much easier for firefighters to save your dog than to have your dog AND YOU!
