Eight Cases of Mumps Reported in McHenry County

It's officially that time of year where I want to cover my whole house, office, and everywhere I go with Lysol. Case in point: a mumps outbreak has been reported in McHenry County. Six cases are tied to a Crystal Lake church and two cases have been reported at the McHenry County jail.

Health officials are urging those without immunity to stay home, such as young children who have not yet been fully vaccinated. Children receive their first dose of the MMR vaccine (for mumps, measles, and rubella) between 12 to 15 months and the second dose at 4 to 6 years old.

If you test positive for mumps or have symptoms, with test results pending, stay isolated until you're no longer infectious.

Symptoms of mumps take approximately 16 to 25 days to appear. Those symptoms can include any combination of:

  • fever
  • headache
  • fatigue
  • body aches
  • loss of appetite
  • swollen salivary glands
  • puffy cheeks
  • swollen jaw

Most sufferers recover after a few weeks; more serious complications can occur. As always, contact your doctor for questions or concerns!
