Alderman Says Mobs of Teens Are a Diversion for Crime

For the second time in less than a week, large crowds of teenagers mobbed downtown Chicago, overwhelming the streets and police. It may look like the teens are just gathering to hang out, but officials say their intentions are much more sinister than that.

According to Alderman Brian Hopkins of the 2nd Ward, word spreads like wildfire on social media for teens to head to the Loop on a certain day, at a certain time. The massive crowds of unruly teens act as a diversion for thefts and assaults.

Police are ramping up patrols and cracking down on the meet-ups.
