Woman Exposed Dozens of People at Movie Theater to Measles

A situation in California is being called a major medical alert. Health officials are trying to contact anyone who attended the opening night of “Avengers: Endgame" at an AMC movie theater in Orange County.

Authorities say a woman attended a midnight showing of the movie on April 26. The next day she went to the emergency room. She was diagnosed with measles, a highly-contagious disease that can have serious and deadly results for people with compromised immune systems, and for children too young to receive the vaccine. The disease still kills more than 100,000 people a year, most under the age of 5.

According to the Mayo Clinic's website, signs and symptoms of measles typically include:

  • Fever.
  • Dry cough.
  • Runny nose.
  • Sore throat.
  • Inflamed eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • Tiny white spots with bluish-white centers on a red background found inside the mouth on the inner lining of the cheek — also called Koplik's spots.
  • A skin rash made up of large, flat blotches that often flow into one another.
