Chicago Will Set Up Lakefront Barriers to Prevent Flood Damage

After a summer of record-breaking lake levels, the city is taking action to protect the lakefront.

For months now Chicagoans have witnessed record-high lake levels, which has led to eroded beaches and crumbling concrete. Many beaches were even closed for the summer! The city has a plan in place to protect the beaches from further damage.

Eight different locations along the lakefront are getting hundreds of yard of barricades, to safeguard against waves. Six north locations and 2 south locations, including some of the city's most popular lakefront hot spots, are included in the project. These locations were deemed most vulnerable to storms and flooding.

Commuters should be aware that the project is slated to continue through the end of September, which means lane closures northbound on Lake Shore Drive during overnight hours.
