Bag Explodes at Midway Seconds Before Being Loaded onto an Airplane

A bag was run over on the tarmac at Midway airport on Monday. The bag then exploded, causing major delays at one of the country's busiest airports. According to officials, the bag belonged to a passenger flying a Volaris airlines flight to Mexico. Officials say there was a phone battery or phone battery charger inside the bag. The bag fell of a vehicle on the tarmac, and was then run over by another vehicle, causing the bag to explode.

Emergency crews were on the scene for nearly three hours before the tarmac was reopened.

Batteries for most electronics are okay to fly in your checked luggage, however lithium metal and lithium ion batteries are prohibited from checked luggage and must be in your carry on.
