Man Crushed by Elevator Honored with School Program in His Name

It was a horrific accident that stunned the nation: A young man in New York City on his way to work was crushed to death when the elevator he was riding in plummeted to the ground below.

30-year-old Sam Wasibren's tragic and untimely passing shocked his family and friends back in Milwaukee. His father says they're still in a state of disbelief. They had just spoken with Sam the night before he passed away. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, but residents and management knew the elevator had been malfunctioning.

To honor Sam's memory, his family has opened a free after-school program for children called Laps and Literacy. It combines Sam's love of basketball, and reading.
