If you've seen a dentist recently, you know it is highly recommended that you brush your teeth twice a day - once in the morning and once at night. However, what many don't tell you is that there are times when you definitely shouldn't brush your teeth. Thankfully, dentist and TikTok sensation Dr. Shaadi Manouchehri revealed exactly when you should not be brushing teeth.

In a recent video she stated, "This is the only time you will catch me telling you not to brush your teeth." She then explained three times when brushing your teeth is ill-advised. The first is after drinking coffee. You might think that it'll help your breath, and while that may be the case, it will also hurt your teeth. She explained, "If you go and brush your teeth straight away you're rubbing acid onto the tooth and wearing the tooth away."

It turns out the same is true if you brush your teeth right after eating breakfast. Dr. Manouchehri said, "You should brush them beforehand because if you brush straight away you're going to be damaging your enamel, and actually when you first wake up in a morning you have quite a lot of bacteria in the mouth and that needs to be brushed before breakfast."

The final time not to brush your teeth is right after you've thrown up. She said, "This is probably all you want to do after you have vomited but actually, the contents of the stomach are extremely acidic and your teeth are made up of minerals. So, when the contents of the stomach have come into the mouth, then the mouth is very acidic and if you brush straight away you rub the acid into the tooth even more."

Instead, wait 20 to 30 minutes before brushing your teeth after coffee or breakfast, and 30 to 60 minutes after throwing up. You could also use mouthwash instead.
