In Cape Coral, Florida, Kyle Myvett became an unexpected hero when he detained a burglary suspect while wearing Batman pajamas early Wednesday (August 27) morning. Myvett was alerted by his home security system to a break-in at his vehicle and, without changing out of his pajamas, went outside to investigate.
According to the Cape Coral Police Department, Myvett found 20-year-old Justin Schimpl rummaging through his truck. Myvett then followed Schimpl into his neighbor's garage, where he detained him until police arrived. Myvett told police, "I grabbed a hold of their shirt and their right wrist, and I said, ‘Listen, don’t try to get away.’"
The police reported that Schimpl allegedly stole multiple items, including two pairs of Ray-Ban sunglasses valued at $300 each, cash, a woman's wristlet, and over $500 in gift cards. Schimpl claimed he had an accomplice, but police found no evidence of another suspect after a thorough search.
Schimpl, who is known to law enforcement from previous investigations, was charged with two counts of burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, two counts of petit theft under $750, and one count of burglary of an occupied dwelling. His first court appearance is scheduled for September 29.
Myvett admitted that he had left his truck unlocked, assuming his neighborhood was safe. However, his quick response was praised by the police, who credited him with stopping the burglary. Myvett humorously noted that he doesn't own Superman pajamas because "if you’re impervious and invincible, you’re not really brave."
