Fungus Sparks Fears About the Banana Going Extinct

Are bananas going extinct? They might be on their way out! That’s the fear after a fungus deadly to bananas has spread like wildfire to South America. Panama Disease, also known as Fusarium wilt, has already affected banana plantations in India, China, Taiwan and Australia killing thousands of acres of bananas. The disease penetrates bananas through the soil, and it cannot be killed with traditional chemicals. Efforts are underway to protect the South American crop, but it may mean a price hike for the popular fruit. So while we may continue to see bananas in our grocery stores, you better get ready to pay big bucks for them!
