Woman Killed By Great White Shark at Popular Maine Beach

A beautiful beach day ended in tragedy for a family vacationing at a popular beach in Maine. Julie Holowach, 63, went for an afternoon swim on Tuesday with her daughter when she was attacked from below by a shark and killed. The attack has been attributed to a Great White, and is the first fatal shark attack in the state's history.

There’s been a steady increase in the seal population along the Northeast due to a federal law that bars the slaughter of marine mammals. Experts believe the shark attack may have been the result of a shark mistaking the victim, who was wearing a black wetsuit, for a seal.

Shark attacks are extremely rare - 37 million to 1 odds.
