Back-To-School Shopping Spending Up, And So Is The Stress

The Bottom Line:

  • Parents expect to spend $507 shopping for the new school year, $40 more dollars than last year
  • 48% of parents say back-to-school shopping stresses them out, with moms feeling more pressure than dads (54% vs. 41%)
  • 67% of parents say savings are more important during back-to-school shopping than any other time of the year

The Full Story:

Before you know it the kiddies will be headed back to school, which is why so many parents are probably hitting the stores right now for back-to-school shopping, and according to a new survey, they’ll be spending more than they have in the past.

A new RetailMeNot poll finds that parents expect to spend $507 shopping for the new school year, $40 more dollars than last year. As for what they’ll be spending their money on:

  • $212 on clothes - up from $189
  • $209 on electronics - up from $186
  • $104 on shoes - up from $95

And while kids may hate the thought of going back to school, it sounds like parents equally despise the idea of back-to-school shopping. In fact, 48% of parents say back-to-school shopping stresses them out, with moms feeling more pressure than dads (54% vs. 41%).

One of those stressors could be a need to find the best deal, with 71% of parents admitting they will wait until they find the best deal before making any purchases, with 67% saying savings are more important during back-to-school shopping than any other time of the year.
