Devin Dawson is a hell of a songwriter and performer. The thing I love most about country music is learning who the masterminds are behind the songs you hear every day. Country music has such a sense of community, they champion the songwriters on a regular basis whereas other genres only promote the artist whose voice ends up on the final cut.
Devin, you may or may not know, co-wrote EVERY single song on his latest album 'Darkhorse' and while he's doing the artist thing now, he has a library full of songs that I'm sure he continues to shop around all the time. It's in your blood as a songwriter, some songs just aren't in line with what your brand is, doesn't mean it's a bad song, just means someone else might be able to give it the wings it needs better than you can, which isn't always the easiest thing to come to terms with but hey, that's the business.
I first heard this song on Mitchell Tenpenny's EP a while back and I thought it was AWESOME. Little did I know Devin was one of the writers...and can I be honest? I kind of like this take better. No disrespect to M10, but I'm a sucker for a stripped down acoustic version of a song, which I've stated MULTIPLE times in these blog posts.
I hope Devin keeps releasing these on a regular basis because between this and his other take on "God's Country", I'm all in on this new series. Keep it up DD! - @Traceahamilton
Take a listen to Mitchell Tenpenny's final cut of 'Truck I Drove In High School" below. Devin's take on "God's Country" is down there for you too.
